Choosing the right berth shapes every day out on the water: ease of access, the safety of your boat and the overall cost of the season. Why the Upper Adriatic — and why the lagoon
The Upper Adriatic offers generally calm waters, sandy bottoms and a dense network of marinas only a few miles apart. The Marano Lagoon, home to Aprilia Marittima, adds a specific advantage: the marina basins are sheltered from wave motion, so boats lie more quietly even in strong winds, and lagoon water is gentler on hulls and equipment than quays exposed to the open sea.
The location is also strategic for cruising: Grado, Trieste and northern Istria are within a day’s sail to the east, the Venice lagoon to the west, and the beaches of Lignano Sabbiadoro are just a few minutes from the lagoon entrance.

In our area, berths typically cover boats from 7 to 25 metres. The practical rule is to choose a berth with some margin over your boat’s overall length — including tender, bathing platform and outboard engines — and to check the width of the allocated water space, not just the length of the quay.
For sailing yachts, draught matters too: depths in the lagoon and along the access channels vary with the tide, so owners of deeper-keeled boats should always ask for the guaranteed minimum depth at the berth and along the entrance channel.
What to check before signing
Before signing a contract, we recommend visiting the berth in person and checking a few concrete points:
Depth and bottom: the actual depth at the berth at low tide and the nature of the bottom in the basin.
Mooring posts and catwalks: the condition of the mooring posts (locally called bricole) and whether catwalks or finger pontoons allow you to step on and off comfortably and safely.
Water and electricity: service pedestals on the pontoon, available power and how consumption is metered.
Security and access: access control to the marina area, CCTV and the presence of staff.
Winter storage: the option of haul-out, launching and covered or dry-stack storage (dry marina) within the same facility, with a workshop and technical assistance.

What determines the price
The price of a mooring mainly depends on the length and width of the berth, its position (berths near the entrance or with a private catwalk are worth more), the services included and the contract duration. Berths for boats over 15 metres are the rarest in the Upper Adriatic and tend to have waiting lists: it pays to plan ahead, ideally in autumn for the following season.
