Lignano Sabbiadoro with kids: the family guide
Lignano Sabbiadoro is one of the most popular beach resorts for families in the Upper Adriatic: eight kilometres of fine sand, gently sloping seabeds and activities designed with children in mind. Our agency has worked this area since the 1980s and hosts hundreds of families every summer in our holiday apartments: this guide collects the advice we give them on arrival.
The beaches: fine sand and shallow water
The feature that makes Lignano ideal for children is the seabed: the water stays shallow for tens of metres from the shoreline, so little ones can play safely while parents stay within arm’s reach. The sand is fine and golden, perfect for sandcastles and games.
The beach clubs offer loungers, umbrellas, cabins and often play areas and entertainment; the equipped free beaches are a good alternative for those who prefer more freedom. Sabbiadoro is the liveliest area, Pineta is quieter and shaded by the historic pine forest, and Riviera overlooks the mouth of the Tagliamento river with a more secluded feel.
Family activities
Beyond the beach, Lignano offers several parks and attractions for children: the Aquasplash water park a few minutes from the centre, Gulliverlandia with its themed areas, Parco Junior for the youngest, and the Parco Zoo Punta Verde on the Tagliamento river, a short drive away. In summer the seafront hosts fairground rides, mini golf and evening markets.
For windy or rainy days, a much-loved alternative is a boat trip in the Marano Lagoon: calm waters, fishermen’s huts and sightings of herons and flamingos excite children at least as much as the theme parks.
Getting around
Lignano is easy to explore on foot or by bike: cycle paths connect Sabbiadoro, Pineta and Riviera, and most residences provide bikes or rent them nearby. For those staying in Aprilia Marittima — about 4 km from Lignano Sabbiadoro — a car remains the most practical option, with parking near the beach access points; in summer there is also a boat connection between the marina and the centre of Lignano.
Day trips
From the area you can easily reach destinations for the whole family: the historic fishing village of Marano Lagunare, Aquileia with its Roman mosaics, and Grado with its lagoon and thermal baths. Venice is about an hour and a half by car and is a classic day out; for something different, the Collio hills and Gorizia castle are a short distance away.
Where to stay with the family
For families we recommend apartments with at least two bedrooms, an equipped kitchen and, if possible, outdoor space. The difference compared to a hotel is above all in the rhythm: breakfast without timetables, the children’s nap in a real bedroom and dinner on the terrace while others are still coming back from the beach.

Is it better to stay in Lignano or Aprilia Marittima with children?
Lignano is convenient for walking to the beach and the town centre; Aprilia Marittima, about 4 km away, offers more tranquillity, a pool and marina life. Many families choose Aprilia Marittima and reach the beach in a few minutes.
What is there to do in Lignano when it rains?
The Parco Zoo Punta Verde (partially covered), a trip to Aquileia or Palmanova, or — wind permitting — a boat trip in the Marano Lagoon are the alternatives families love most.
Do you need a car, or can you get around without one?
Within Lignano you can get around easily on foot or by bike. If you stay in Aprilia Marittima or want to take day trips, a car is recommended; in summer there are also boat connections to Lignano.
